Steven Spielberg, movie director, has been praising Dartmoor's 'natural beauty'. Spielberg spent time (Aug./Sept. 2010) shooting the film adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's book

 'The War Horse'. The majority of the filming has been based around the area of Sheepstor on Dartmoor. He was so blown away by the area, exclaiming his delight, stating,

"I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse on Dartmoor. And, with two-and-a-half weeks of extensive coverage of landscapes and skies, I hardly scratched the surface of the visual opportunities offered to me.

CYCLISTS WELCOME   Sparrowhawk Backpackers is a highly popular 2nd night stop for you all attempting the End2End cycle route. Recommended by CTC, Section 2, From Golant YHA across Dartmoor to Sparrowhawk, Moretonhampstead.

Plenty of space for repairing bikes and a secure shed. There are 3 pubs, good beer/ food, within 3 mins walk from the hostel, if you're too weary to cater for yourselves! Co-Op is open 8am-9pm. if you need supplies.

Get together with some friends, kayaking, cycling, climbing, hiking or art group, family and book the whole place for a weekend or a few days.

Kayak and Climbing courses can be arranged in advance.

The season of Wild Walks, Wild Rivers and Wild Ponies!

With autumn well on, it's a great opportunity to see Dartmoor, in it's wild state. Rushing rivers and waterfalls tumbling in great cascades, plenty of wind to blow the cobwebs away and stunning autumn colours in the forests.

Wild Camping on Dartmoor- the full Dartmoor experience!

   Wild camping on Dartmoor for 1 or 2 nights is an opportunity not to be missed. Wake up next to a river and dip in (for the brave), or by a majestic tor. Hike from the hostel independantly, or have a lift to a great spot. Wild camping is permitted almost anywhere on the open moor.    Near Scorehill Stone Circle

Sparrowhawk offers a camping kit for hire and advice.                                                                          2 manTent , camping mats, small stove with gas, compass, os28 map, windup torch/radio, pan, cutlery/plates, tea/coffee, all in a rucksack and ready to go.                                                         You will need £50 deposit! Hire cost £30 per night (includes gas).

Moreton. and surrounding area is home to many musicians so the music scene is quite lively around here including weekly open mic nights.

Regular lively acoustic Folk Jam night, last mon. of the month in the White Horse, all welcome to join in. 2 mins walk from the hostel.
